The 4th High Stakes Backgammon Event at the Strawberry Hil Hotel and Spa
Advertised as the biggest backgammon event in the world, the 4th High Stakes Backgammon Tournament will take place on April 24th, 2009-April 26th, 2009 in the hills of Irish Town, St. Andrew. The venue for the event is the Strawberry Hill Hotel and Spa, with its fantastic view of Kingston and its surrounding areas.
Backgammon tournament organizer, Mr. Alastair Macbeath said that around 32 players will battle it out for a total of $2 million in cash prizes. The tournament will be on a first-come, first-serve basis gaming format. Like the World Cup, participants will be divided into 8 groups for the round-robin before the top sixteen participants get down to a heads-up competition.
Macbeath said that the game of backgammon is a very popular game in Jamaica and the High Stakes backgammon tournament gives opportunity to those who want to enjoy the game to a higher level and a chance to test their skills against the best players in the land. MacBeath added it will be three days of fun and excitement and two days of engaging backgammon competition.
The triumph of Germany-based Iranian Chiva Taffazzoli in last year's backgammon tournament has inspired local players to polish their game and they are determined to recapture the title. Taffazzoli is expected to return to defend his title. The backgammon event will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25th, 2009, with game play in the preliminary round continuing until 6:00 p.m.
Later that same evening, customers and participants alike will be entertained by different musical offerings while enjoying dinner in the Jade Courtyard. The backgammon tournament resumes the following day at 10:00 a.m. with the final game action and will culminate in an awards ceremony on the main lawn of the hotel at 4:30 p.m.
Other activities that will take place during the backgammon tournament are art exhibits and fresh flower stalls. Eurostars Motors will also host a Mercedez Benz car show for car lovers. The game of backgammon is considered to be a combination of luck and skill dating back six thousand years to the Middle East. It is a board game for two players in which pieces are moved around the board according to the result of the dice.
A player wins by getting off their pieces from the board.
