Backgammon Board Layout

In Backgammon there are 5 pieces needed in order to play as well as a particular Backgammon Board Layout:

  • Backgammon Checkers
    • 15 light round pieces.
    • 15 dark round pieces.
  • Dice and Dice Cup
    • A pair of dice with six sides numbered 1-6.
    • A Dice cup used for rolling and prevents manipulation of dice.
  • Backgammon Board Layout
    • Made up of 4 quadrants.
      • Each quadrant has six triangles (called points) in alternating colors. Triangles are numbered 1-24 where the 1 is the player's final point and 24 is his opponent's final point. (See Picture)
      • The "Bar" in the Backgammon board layout separates the Home Board, or Inner Board and Outer Board.
      • The Bar is the elevated section in the middle of the Backgammon board layout, used for placing "Hit" checker(s).
  • Backgammon Doubling Cube
    • Six-sided cube marked with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 on the faces.
    • Used for increasing and keeping track of the stakes.

The Backgammon board layout must be set up to start every game in a certain way:

  • Dark Checker (opponent) player places:
    • 2 checkers on the 1st point
    • 5 checkers on the 12th point
    • 3 checkers on the 17th point
    • 5 checkers on the 19th point
  • Light Checker player places:
    • 2 checkers on the 24th point
    • 5 checkers on the 13th point
    • 3 checkers on the 8th point
    • 5 checkers on the 6th point

After all the checkers are in place in the Backgammon board layout the game may begin. Go to the Moving Checkers section to find out who starts first and how the checkers can be played according to standard Backgammon rules.
