The High Stakes Backgammon Event at the Strawberry Hills Hotel

Backgammon lovers will gather on the luxurious Strawberry Hills Hotel beginning on April 24th, 2009 until April 26th, 2009 to fight it out for over $2 million in monetary prizes, as the dice gets to set to be thrown at the 4th High Stakes Backgammon Event. The event has grown to be a truly international tournament and will once again attract top notch baccarat players like Iranian Chiva Tafazolli, who is also the head of the World Backgammon Association as well as other international backgammon players.

Despite its novelty in the sporting landscape of Jamaica, the game of backgammon is one of the most widely enjoyed games all over the world and is very popular with online gamers. It is also considered to be one of the oldest games known to humankind with its roots traced back to the Mediterranean region over six thousand years ago. The backgammon tournament is a result of the dedication of music icon and backgammon enthusiasts Chris Blackwell (who is also the owner of Strawberry Hills), who want to host a backgammon tournament in Jamaica for a long time now.

Event organizer Alastair MacBeath promised an interesting affair and expressed happiness at the tournament's growth. MacBeath said that backgammon is well-known social game in Jamaica and the High Stakes Backgammon tournament allows backgammon players in the country to test their skills against backgammon players all over the world. The tournament, which features thirty-two players, will participate in a round robin format in the first round with top players advancing to the round of sixteen. Winners will then qualify for the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final round where the top cash prizes will be contested by the players.

Backgammon is a board game between a pair of players with a dice and fifteen game pieces. A player wins by removing all of their fifteen pieces from the backgammon board before their opponent.
