Lawrence Powell Triumphs Against Martin Barkwill at the 2009 Bristol Backgammon Tournament

Lawrence Powell has been declared the winner of the 2009 Bristol Backgammon Tournament. He narrowly defeated runner-up Martin Barkwill in a highly contested backgammon final on August 27th, 2009.

Participants at this year's highly successful backgammon tournament included recently crowned Japanese World Backgammon Champion Masayuki Mochizuki, who also conducted a backgammon strategy seminar and other big names in the circuit like 2002 European Backgammon Champion Katja Spillum Svendsen, 2006 World Champion Philip Vischjager and former number Danish backgammon player Mikael Jensen.

Danish player Michael Sorensen won the consolation competition of the tournament while fellow Dane Pia Jeppesen won the last chance competition of the tournament. a total of one hundred backgammon enthusiasts participated in the three separate competitive game flights, including thirty-nine backgammon players from the different parts of the world.

Tournament Director Ian Tarr said that it was a highly successful backgammon tournament and he firmly believes that it is one of the most well-attended and successful Bristol Backgammon Tournament that they have ever organized.

Tarr said that he feels very proud that the home players were successful in the tournament and hopes that Powell and Barkwill and the rest of the participants will return next year to participate again in the backgammon tournament.
